Image of the Month: 85 years ago, on 16 March 1940, James Isbister became the first British civilian to be killed by a German bomb during the Second World war. Fourteen German Junkers Ju 88 bombers attacked the British fleet moored in the Orkney Islands at Scapa Flow, a sheltered anchorage that has long played an important role in travel, trade and conflict. It acted as the chief naval base of the United Kingdom in both the First and Second World Wars. Isbister lived at Brig o’ Waithe (pictured), to the west of Scapa Flow, and was killed when 22 high explosive bombs missed their intended military target and fell among the houses where he lived. This image was taken as part of the All Scotland Survey, a complete aerial survey of Scotland flown in the late 1980s.

March is Women’s History Month, and so this is the perfect time for us to celebrate just some of the many women who undertook vital work at RAF Medmenham as part of the Allied Central Interpretation Unit (ACIU). Women made up nearly half of the ACIU, and women Photographic Interpreters (PIs) contributed to some of the most significant operations of the war, from the Normandy Landings to Operation Crossbow combatting deadly German V Weapons. On the NCAP website, you can find out all about such prominent figures as archaeologist Dorothy Garrod, actor Sarah Spencer-Churchill, society photographer Ursula Powys-Lybbe and pilot Charlotte Bonham-Carter.
In this edition of the newsletter, we’re also focussing on the Directorate of Overseas Surveys (DOS) Collection. You can find out about our dynamic partnership to digitise and make accessible the whole collection, as well as a small exhibition of DOS material taking place at the University of St Andrews.
We hope you enjoy exploring this month’s newsletter!
Best wishes, The NCAP Team |

| Women's History Month: The Women of Medmenham |
Project Perspective: Uncovering the Past with Historic Aerial Imagery Through Partnerships |
| |
|
| This Women’s History Month, the National Collection of Aerial Photography is privileged to introduce you to a small selection of some of the many women who contributed to the vital photo intelligence work undertaken at RAF Medmenham, home of the Allied Central Interpretation Unit. Through a collaboration with Stockholm University and the University of California (Berkeley), and researchers at Stanford University and Caltech, NCAP has been able to accelerate digitisation efforts and help transform access to the DOS Collection, making it a more powerful tool for unlocking insights into land use and environmental change. |

| The Natural World: Geology of Scotland |
Exhibition: Reinterpreting the Directorate of Overseas Surveys Collection |
| |
|
| Aerial images are of use to geologists mapping major rock features, both structural and lithological. The images featured in this Air Photo Finder Theme are drawn from the All Scotland Survey, a complete aerial survey of Scotland flown during the summers of 1987, 1988 and 1989 at a uniform scale of 1:24,000. They illustrate some of the key geological sites in Scotland. |
The Directorate of Overseas Surveys (DOS) commissioned aerial photography to create mapping of Commonwealth countries. This exhibition illustrates the great potential of the DOS Collection (cared for by NCAP) for interdisciplinary research and study, showing how DOS imagery documents climate change, urban development and the environmental consequences of fossil fuel extraction. |
