A black and white photo of a cathedral

Image of the Month: This month saw the reopening of Notre Dame - wonderful news for the city of Paris, and a testament to the dedicated team who worked to restore the landmark. This photo from NCAP shows the Gothic cathedral shortly after the liberation of Paris a month previously, taken by a photo reconnaissance de Havilland Mosquito flown by No. 544 Squadron RAF. The sortie contains 228 images predominately covering central Paris and Châlons-en-Champagne. No. 544 Squadron was formed on 19 October 1942 and was disbanded on 13 October 1945. For the first year of operation, No. 544 Squadron flew a variety of aircraft, including Vickers Wellingtons and Supermarine Spitfires, but from October 1943 it solely operated Mosquitoes.

Discover the Geology of Scotland Digital Imaging at NCAP

From extinct volcanoes to country-splitting rifts, aerial photographs have been used extensively for mapping areas of geological interest in Scotland. Many of these images are now in the care of NCAP.  NCAP’s digital imaging facility operates 24 hours a day to create high-resolution copies of original aerial photographs held in print and on film. The efficient operation works to meet the needs of customers and the ongoing digitisation-for-preservation tasks as the team work to make 30 million images accessible.

Introducing NCAP's Volunteer Digital Connectors Recommended Reads: Above Scotland Pocket Book

NCAP has been working with the volunteers team at HES to develop a new volunteering role: the NCAP Digital Connector. This pilot project is engaging volunteers from various backgrounds to footprint hard-to-find images so they can be made usable by, and accessible to, the public on our Air Photo Finder. Aerial photography captures Scotland's timeless beauty and history, revealing its landscapes from above, showcasing everything from castles to beaches, offering a unique perspective on the past and present.
