Monochrome image of the Eiffel Tower.

Image of the Month: 80 years ago this month, a photo-reconnaissance Lockheed P-38 Lightning of the 22nd Photographic Reconnaissance Squadron (based at RAF Mount Farm in England) captured this striking image of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Paris had been liberated the previous August, but remained in political and social turmoil for a number of months. April 1945 marked the return of some sort of normality as the first post-war municipal elections were held in the city. They also marked the first time women were able to vote in France.

This month we celebrate our pioneering project to digitise the 1.7 million images in the Directorate of Overseas Surveys (DOS) collection. An exhibition of a selection of images from the DOS collection is being hosted at the University of St Andrews until the end of July, so now is the perfect time to turn the spotlight on the innovative work undertaken at NCAP to preserve this fascinating collection and make it accessible.

It’s not just in St Andrews that we have an exhibition presence. ‘Maps: Memories from the Second World War’ at the National War Museum in Edinburgh Castle also features images from the National Collection of Aerial Photography. Read on to find out more.

We hope you enjoy exploring this month’s newsletter!

Best wishes,
The NCAP Team

The Story of the Directorate of Overseas Surveys Pioneering Robotic Digitisation

April’s article series explores the Directorate of Overseas Surveys (DOS) project, our largest print preservation and digitisation project to date. You can read all about the creation of the DOS collection, how it arrived at NCAP and what uses it might have today. To complement our series on the Directorate of Overseas Surveys project, you can discover more about how the project helped us develop new and innovative digitisation methods. Being able to automate our scanning processes addresses our crucial need to digitise our collections before they deteriorate.

Air Photo Finder in Focus – Heathrow Airport Exhibition - Maps: Memories from the Second World War

While we continue to develop and add to our new Air Photo Finder, there is already plenty to explore. One of the best-represented parts of the UK so far is Heathrow Airport. The airport and its surroundings are covered by over 500 frames so far from the 1960s to the 1990s. ‘Maps: Memories from the Second World War’ at the National War Museum in Edinburgh Castle explores the purpose, importance and personal significance of military maps in the Second World War. Among much else, the display includes footage from NCAP and highlights the importance of aerial photography through items such as logbooks and photographs.
